While we would never sell you a vehicle that has severe flood damage, there are many less-than-reputable dealers who will try and make a quick sale. It may be surprising to notice how easy it is for a dealer to cover-up flood damage or do what’s called a “title wash” so that it’s nearly impossible to prove the car was exposed to extreme levels of water. Be wary of a deal that seems too good to be true – especially after a hurricane or major flooding close by. You may find yourself spending large amount of money at repair shops soon after you drive home.
Beyond the sticker price, there are other elements you should keep a close eye on when on the lookout for flood damage. Much like the interior of a home, the cabin of a vehicle effected by water will often have a musty smell and carpet that is stained or mismatched. Overuse of air freshener is often done to cover up the odor, so ask to open the windows and wait a bit before you take if for a test drive. There should be no moisture or fog visible in the instrument panel. Rust in places like the pedals or under the dashboard is also a dangerous sign.
If you have any doubts, don’t hesitate to take a look underneath the hood. While it’s normal to have a few leaves or debris around the engine, extreme amount of sand or sticks located inside small areas means it probably was exposed to rushing water. Take out the dipstick and observe the quality of the oil. If it looks like any water has leaked in, you want to walk away. This could be a sign of flooding or a major mechanical problem – either way you don’t want to get involved.
